Frequently Asked Questions:

Why is the Orchid 3rd generation low radiation range different from conventional digital (DECT) cordless phones?

Our 3rd generation phones use SlickSwitch technology; an ingenious patented system that switches the phone to “sleep mode” when a call is completed, thereby totally eliminating any further (1.8GHz) microwave radiation. The phone and base station remain in 'sleep mode' (zero microwave radiation) until a new call is made or received, at this point SlickSwitch™ re-activates the phone and base station for the duration of the call.

How long does the Orchid’s handsets/base station take to wake-up when a new all is made or received?

When our phones are not being used the SlickSwitch™ technology puts the phone and base station into “sleep mode”. When a new call is being made or received the phone will take approx. 2-4 seconds to completely re-activate. This enables the handset(s) and base station to recognise each other and set the call up. Other brands of phones keep the microwave connection operative 24 hours a day, our Orchid Low Radiation phones don’t, they only make the connection when your actually using the phone.

What is the range of the Orchid Low Radiation Phones?

The telephone’s range can be affected by walls, partitions or other obstructions between the base station unit and the handset(s). Optimum range can only be achieved if there are no obstacles between the handset and the base station. When the transmission power switch on your base station is set to ‘Automatic’, the effective range can vary between 50 and 300 metres (similar to most other corldess phones). When switched to the ‘Low Radiation’ position the range is reduced. Ideally the base station should be placed in a slightly raised position to maximise range.

Does the Orchid use full power when a call is being made?

Our phones automatically sense how far the handset is away from the base station, if within several metres the power is cut by DRR (Dynamic Range reduction) by as much as 75%. Conventional digital (DECT) cordless phones always transmit at full power. You can also manually switch the base station to Low Radiation mode (if desired).

Are they difficult to set up?

Our cordless phones are feature rich and supplied with straight forward instructions, making them easy to set up and use. If for some reason you misplace or lose your instructions you can download them from this website.

Are your phones Eco-Friendly?

Yes they are, all our phones are EF enabled. Once the system goes into sleep mode our specially designed power units immediately detect this state and automatically reduces the power levels by more than half, with up to up to 50% energy saving.

How many handsets can be used with a single Orchid Low Radiation base station?

You can use up to six Orchid handsets with one Orchid low radiation base station. Our phones are supplied as single, twin and triple packs and we also supply additional handsets. For example use one in the bedroom, another in the kitchen, etc. The base station connects to the phone socket and the other (additional) handsets just need to run from standard mains sockets.

Is it easy to add additional handsets?

Yes, once a new handset is charged you only have to press a few buttons to ‘pair’ the new handset with your existing base station. You can use up to six handsets with each base station.

Can you communicate between handsets?

Yes you can, there is a full intercom facility available between handsets. You can make calls between your handsets plus you can transfer external call between handsets. With any call in or out you can even set up a conference facility enabling more than one handset to join the call.

Can you switch off the ‘Low Radiation’ feature?

No, the low radiation feature is automatic; it cannot be switched off. But, you only use the phone within 25 metres (approximately) of the base station you can switch to “Low radiation” on the base station. This will decrease the power levels by up to 75%
